The Professorship for Applied Geography, Spatial Research and Spatial Planning…

… at the Department of Geography and Spatial Research is affiliated to the Faculty of Geosciences, Geography and Astronomy at the University of Vienna. In addition to conduct scientific research in the area of applied research, the urban and the spatial research, this professorship is responsible of the master’s degree program in spatial research and spatial planning as well as of the joint master program 4Cities.

The field of „spatial research and spatial planning“ was introduced in 1975 at the University of Vienna as branch of the diploma study of geography (Prof. Dr. E. Lichtenberger). Since winter term 2007 „spatial research and spatial planning“is an individual, two-year master’s degree program (adapted to the European academic structure) which is based on the three-year bachelor’s degree program of geography.

General Principle

The team of the Professorship for Applied Geography, Spatial Research and Spatial Planning is a workgroup for interdisciplinary research and teaching at the Institute for Geography and Regional Research at the University of Vienna. Our thematic focuses are anchored in the following areas: “Spatial Research and Spatial Planning”, “Urban Research” and „Demography, Migration and Integration“. The spatial perspective concentrates on the national and European context, including transatlantic comparisons.

It is our aspiration to produce socially relevant and trend-setting insights. Within our research and teaching activity we apply a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research methods, use geographic information systems and visualization possibilities and are oriented towards new methods of project planning, execution and presentation. The workgroup also attaches great value to new forms of cooperative knowledge generation (doctoral colleges, research platforms, international study courses).

We owe our reputation to the professional qualifications of our graduates, the trust of numerous project partners, the publication and communication of our research outcomes, the organization of events, as well as to our participation at conferences and lectures both in Austria and abroad.
